City Wedding Photographers Melbourne - Permits and Laws you should know about!

E-mail Print

Wedding Photographers Melbourne City and CBD district have had an awakening recently with some amplifications made by Melbourne Council and South Melbourne Police regarding the practices of wedding photography within the precinct. The following wedding photography Melbourne specific information was made available to us via the Wedding Car Association of Victoria.

If you are planning a wedding in Melbourne, or arranging a photo shoot with wedding photographers, then Melbourne City Council has some very enforceable (by Police and By - Laws Officers) no - go areas.

Wedding Photography Melbourne City - Monday to Friday

Wedding Photography is no longer permitted in most lanes within the Melbourne City Central Business District, during weekdays. Many complaints have been received by Melbourne City Council outlining instances of lane blockages to car park clients and delivery vehicle drivers simply going about their normal duties of setting down and picking up goods.

Weekend Wedding Photography Melbourne City and Central Business District

Wedding Photography is no longer permitted in most lanes within the Melbourne City Central Business District before 1pm Saturdays.

Wedding Car Drivers, perhaps once the recipients of tolerance by police and by laws officers (were they ever tolerant to anyone?) will have hefty fines issued (and lose demerit points if booked by the police) without warning or caution. It goes without saying that wedding photographers conducting photography in Melbourne are subject to the same treatment, as are other persons breaching the law. It seems the times they are a changing - once the professional wedding photographers got in and got out, with the shots captured in moments - not minutes or many minutes -  a friendly nod or wave, was all you needed to get you the time you needed.

(Perhaps it takes longer now, because new school wedding photographers need to check the pic with the review button and LCD screen - my goodness how would they cope if they were shooting transparency film - with a minimum of 3 days' delay before results could be seen?}

In particular, the areas within and around:

  • Flinders Lane
  • Hosier Lane
  • Market Street
  • Bond Street
  • Duckboard Place
  • All lanes fronting onto Flinders Lane, Lt Collins St, Lt Bourke St
  • Federation Square
  • City Square
  • All "No Standing" areas
  • All "No Parking" areas.

Heavy fines will be given without warning to drivers. If Police are issuing fines, drivers will also lose demerit points.

As a person planning a wedding in Melbourne City or intending to visit Melbourne City for the purpose of having wedding photos taken, it is imperative that you factor in the extra time that finding a legitimate parking spot takes, Keep in mind that you will need to make your way from the car park to the city streets for wedding photography, then back to your wedding car again.
